Forecast

August 10, 2022/report

August 10, 2022

The winds aloft have moved from southerly to southwesterly. This has bumped the monsoon eastward into Nevada. All this has been brought on by the slow northward movement of an upper low off the central Oregon coast and the slight eastward shift of upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest. Pressures aloft above central California are just moderately high, thus temperatures will be reasonably warm for this time of year with most locations in the mid 90s this afternoon. Models indicate the high over the Desert Southwest will expand westward towards California over the weekend, bumping up temperatures to near the century mark by Saturday. The back and forth wobbling of the Four Corners high will once again shift the winds aloft southerly to possibly even southeasterly by Monday of next week. this will begin to transport moisture from the monsoon back into California with an increase in isolated thunderstorms over the mountains and deserts of southern California beginning this weekend and up the Sierra Nevada by Monday. these same models show the high further west than we’ve seen in recent weeks, so by the middle of next week we should see readings in the 101 to 105 degree range. Even the two week outlook is indicating above average temperatures with the continuation of the very active monsoon season we’ve seen this year. The marine layer along the coast remains shallow enough to prevent penetration into the valley and this will be the case for the next several days.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Friday. Mostly clear Friday night through Sunday with a slow warming trend. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday night through Wednesday and becoming hot.

Two Week Outlook:  August 17 through August 23  This model shows a continuation of an active monsoon season over the Desert Southwest and occasionally California with daily chances of thunderstorms over the mountains and partly cloudy skies over the valley. Above average temperatures will continue.

August:  This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.

August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Saturday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.

Rain: Expect dry weather for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
