A bubble of warm subsiding air will cap the valley for the next week or so, driving temperatures to excessively hot levels. At 5:00am, the temperature was 78 degrees at Sandburg at an elevation of 4,100 feet. Pressure patterns at the surface are just slightly onshore, but not enough to pull any modified marine air down the valley. The freezing level over Oakland has risen to 17,200 feet. Widespread triple digits will occur today. Beginning Thursday, hottest locations will be pushing 108 or so and possibly 110 Friday through Sunday. High resolution modeling indicates readings of 105 to 110 all the way through Wednesday of next week. The winds aloft will become south/southeast, however there’s only a limited amount of monsoon moisture available. It may be enough, though, for an isolated thunderstorm or two over the high Sierra this weekend. A trough of low pressure will finally begin to push into the Pacific Northwest and northern California next Thursday and Friday for a cooling trend as the marine layer finally deepens and moves through the Delta and down the valley.
Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Friday. Mostly clear and extremely hot Friday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook: September 7 through September 12: This model continues to show hot weather for California. It also indicates the monsoon will be active, occasionally moving into California for chances of mountain storms and valley clouds.
August: This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.
August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Saturday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.
Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
