September 1, 2022

The heat wave we are currently dealing with will rewrite the record books over the next week or so with temperatures near 110 at the hottest locations as early as Friday afternoon. Typically, hot weather is created as high pressure settles over the Four Corners region of the Desert Southwest, putting central California on the western flank of the high. This time around, however, very strong high pressure will center over Nevada and California, driving temperatures into record territory. It’s been a hot summer this year but some of the hottest weather will occur over the next five days. Currently, high resolution modeling indicates the hottest temperatures will occur Monday and Tuesday. The only advantage we have, which is minor, is the fact that dew points will range in the upper 40s and lower 50s, resulting in relative humidity down into the teens during the hottest part of the day. There are some high clouds over Kern County, however no thunderstorms are anticipated over the high Sierra due to a very strong cap. The latest balloon sounding over Oakland puts the freezing level at 17,600 feet. Sandburg, at an elevation of 4,100 feet was reporting 80 degrees at 4:00am, illustrating the hot air mass above the valley floor. I don’t really see any relief from the heat until Friday or Saturday when the high flattens out due to a weak low moving through the Pacific Northwest.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Tuesday with the exception of a few high clouds. Mostly clear and continued hot Tuesday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  September 8 through September 13:  This model continues to show hot weather for California. It also indicates the monsoon will be active, occasionally moving into California for chances of mountain storms and valley clouds.

August:  This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.

August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Sunday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.

Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
