Forecast

September 2, 2022/report

September 2, 2022

Yesterday, temperatures were between 103 and 107 on the valley floor. Readings today will soar to between 105 and 109. The very strong high centered over the Great Basin this morning has its western side over California. The freezing level is all the way up to 17,700 feet while the marine layer has peeled back to 1,100 feet. There will be a slight downward trend on temperatures Saturday due to a flattening of the high as a weak trough of low pressure moves through the Pacific Northwest. Then, the high will quickly bounce back with temperatures at the hottest locations possibly exceeding 110 Monday through Wednesday. In the meantime, clockwise rotation around the high will feed a minimal amount of moisture from the monsoon into central California for a chance of short lived afternoon thunderstorms. A tropical system will move partially up the Baja Peninsula then will be forced westward out to sea and not affecting California at all. The GFS model shows a strong tropical system moving up the Baja coastline, weakening as it moves into cooler waters but making its way al the way to the southern California coast by next weekend for a chance of showers and thunderstorms into central California. This is just one model’s read on things, however we’re right at the peak of the hurricane season so we’ll watch with great interest as we progress through the blistering heat of next week.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot all the way through Friday of next week with occasional high clouds.

Two Week Outlook:  September 9 through September 14:  This model continues to show hot weather for California. It also indicates the monsoon will be active, occasionally moving into California for chances of mountain storms and valley clouds.

August:  This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.

August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Monday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.

Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
