Most locations have either reached or are nearing the 100 degree mark, as of midday. Readings of 105 to 108 appear likely this afternoon. It’s possible readings may be a bit cooler Friday due to increasing cloudiness from the south. Hurricane Kay is nearing the halfway point up the Baja peninsula as she chugs to the north/northwest. Precipitation will begin to overspread southern California Friday with heavy amounts over the desert regions and even as much as an inch along the coastal and intermediate valley regions of southern California. Computer projections for the valley are a bit ominous, especially for Kern and Tulare Counties. Latest models project that, between Friday night and Sunday night, as much as a quarter to one-half inch could fall with much lighter amounts from Fresno County north. It’s possible rain could reach Kern County sometime after midnight Friday night then spread northward Saturday as Kay dissipates southwest of San Diego. Rainfall projections for the southern Sierra Nevada and the Kern County mountains and deserts indicate between one and two inches are possible. In fact, flash flood watches are already in effect for the summit of the Sierra Nevada down into the Owens Valley. It’s rare to see a reverse rain shadow but this is weather and anything is possible, as we’ve learned this past week with the unbelievable heat. The chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through Sunday then begin to decrease Sunday night with just a slight chance Monday. most of us, I believe, are ready for some early fall-type weather and it appears that wish will be granted next week as a trough of low pressure allows marine air to be pushed in from time to time, lowering temperatures to near to marginally below average.

Numerous showers and a chance of isolated thunderstorms from Kings and Tulare Counties southward Sunday night with a chance of light showers from Fresno County north. Variable cloudiness Monday with a slight chance of showers. Clearing Monday night. Becoming mostly clear Tuesday through Thursday.
