September 20, 2022 report

September 20, 2022

That same band of moisture which all day yesterday was feeding from south to north across mainly the western half of the central valley is remaining in place but has lost the deeper subtropical moisture, thus the light showers have ended. Doppler radar is indicating some light showers are falling, though, in Mariposa and Tuolumne Counties. The low’s center of circulation has actually backed up a bit and is now centered roughly 350 miles to the west of San Francisco. All of the forecast models show this system moving northeastward into norther California tonight. It should be over Idaho tonight then over North Dakota Friday. This will allow upper level high pressure to begin to build over California for our next warming trend. Before we get there, however, we have 72 hours of very pleasant temperatures. The freezing level over Oakland this morning was only 9,500 feet, illustrating the cool air mass over the Golden State. Saturday will be the transition day from the current air mass to more of a typical September pattern as temperatures will near 90 then top into the mid to upper 90s Monday through Wednesday of next week with a prolonged period of dry weather.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness through tonight with a small chance of scattered light showers from Fresno County north. Partly cloudy Wednesday morning. Mostly clear Wednesday afternoon through Tuesday of next week.

Two Week Outlook:  September 26 through October 2: This model shows a blanket of upper level high pressure over the eastern Pacific and California for above average temperatures. It also points to an active monsoon with moisture moving into Arizona and possibly southern California.

October:  This model is really a flip of the coin as far as precipitation is concerned and shows no real bias for above or below average rainfall. It does indicate somewhat above average temperatures will continue.

October, November, December: This model definitely has a bias for above average temperatures for the next 90 days. It also points to above average rainfall for  northern California with below average precipitation for southern California. With that in mind, that gives California near average precipitation.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be variable today to around 12 mph. winds tonight through Friday will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and early evenings. During the night and morning hours, winds will be at or less than 5 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: There is still a small chance of a few light showers, mainly from Fresno County north today and mainly this morning. Dry weather will return tonight and continue through the remainder of the week.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
