September 27, 2022 report

September 27, 2022

Lemoore topped out at 100 degrees yesterday. All other locations were between 96 and 99. Temperatures will only slowly begin to. come down over the next several days, but even then will remain above late September values. The freezing level  over Oakland taken earlier this morning is late summer like. It will also begin falling over the next 72 hours. Currently, we’re still being governed by a large high over the southwest US which extends northward into western Canada. A low center will move out of the Gulf of Alaska to a position off the coast of the Pacific Northwest tonight then through Washington, Oregon and the northern ¼ of California Wednesday. This will increase the onshore flow, allowing modified sea breeze to move down the valley Wednesday night and Thursday. Temperatures will lower from primarily Merced County north with the cooling trend being slower in the south valley as it’s further away from the source of the marine air. My guess now is that Thursday through the weekend will see temperatures lowering off into the lower 90s, perhaps the upper 80s from Merced County north. As soon as this system moves through, upper level high pressure will follow, allowing temperatures to incrementally increase through the middle of next week. after Sunday, a zone of high pressure will stretch from northern Baja northward through the Pacific Northwest, maintaining lower 90s for a few days. At this point I don’t see any chance of precipitation. By the middle of next week, a low will be off the California coast which will simply dissipate out there with high pressure remaining in place.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through  Friday night. Mostly clear skies will continue Friday night through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  October 4 through October 10: This model doesn’t really give guidance for either above or below average rainfall, therefore the chance of rain will remain low. Temperatures will remain marginally above average.

October:  This model is really a flip of the coin as far as precipitation is concerned and shows no real bias for above or below average rainfall. It does indicate somewhat above average temperatures will continue.

October, November, December: This model definitely has a bias for above average temperatures for the next 90 days. It also points to above average rainfall for northern California with below average precipitation for southern California. With that in mind, that gives California near average precipitation.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the late morning through the early morning hours will be variable to no more than 12 mph. winds during the night and early morning hours will be generally at or less than 5 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Friday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
