October 25, 2022 report

October 25, 2022

Weak upper level high pressure will be above California today, allowing temperatures to warm a bit above yesterday’s readings. Most locations this afternoon will run in the mid to upper 70s. The air aloft has warmed a great deal over the past 24 hours. Yesterday, the balloon sounding over Oakland was 6,700 feet. The latest sounding indicated a level of 12,700 feet. The progressive pattern will be with us for the remainder of the week as a weak trough moves through the Pacific Northwest for a minor cooling trend. Readings will fall back Wednesday and Thursday then rise again Friday and Saturday. Overall, however, these will be minor fluctuations as systems move through the Pacific Northwest with only higher level clouds over the valley from time to time. Medium range models are inconclusive for early November. The GFS model for November 1 and 2 shows a robust low off the central and southern California coast, spreading precipitation over the valley with possibly more activity beyond November 2. Let’s keep our fingers crossed

Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds, skies will be mostly clear through Friday. The same for Friday night through Tuesday with mostly clear skies.

Two Week Outlook:  October 31 through November 6  this model is really no help in determining the chance of precipitation for the valley. Temperatures are projected to be marginally above average.

November:  Both the 30 and 90 day projections indicate a swath of below average rainfall from southern California eastward to Texas with above average precipitation over the Pacific Northwest. Much of northern California is projected to have near average rainfall. Temperatures will remain marginally above average.

November, December, January:  The 90 day model also projects lower than average precipitation from southern California through Texas with above average precipitation over the Pacific Northwest. Northern and north/central California are projected to have near average precipitation with marginally above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be generally variable to no more than 10 mph during the late morning through the afternoon hours. Winds during the overnight hours will be light to near calm.

Rain: It still appears dry weather will continue through the end of the month. Once we get into November, models begin to diverge. One model shows a significant storm off the southern and central California coast, spreading precipitation over central California. Later in the week, a system is projected to move out of the Gulf of Alaska and will spread rain over California. Other models, though, show just the opposite, showing dry weather through the period. It’ll be interesting to see if other models trend towards the wet solution. For now, though, we’ll keep the forecast dry.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
