November 23, 2022
Temperatures as of midday are running near what they were 24 hours ago. Up 2 in one location and down 2 in others. Visibilities are running generally 5 to 7 miles. A fairly strong ridge of high pressure is located roughly 400 miles off shore with a ridge building into the Pacific Northwest and far southwestern Canada. This high will result in a gorgeous holiday weekend with readings near 70 on Thanksgiving Day and Friday, falling back just a bit Saturday as a weak ripple of low pressure runs through the high. Most models this afternoon give a little more hope on the chance for rain Monday afternoon into Tuesday. This system will shift eastward fairly quickly late Tuesday into Wednesday. Models show a second high but with most of its energy diving into the Great Basin just east of the Sierra Nevada. Forecasts will be tweaked as we approach the Monday time frame, based on what later models project. One element that is a given is the Monday afternoon through Tuesday event will be cold with snow levels between 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Longer range models this afternoon are still tilting towards above average precipitation for central California and below average temperatures.
Forecast: Outside of some high thin clouds and patchy night and morning fog, it will be mostly clear through Sunday night. Increasing cloudiness Monday with a chance of rain Monday afternoon. Rain likely Tuesday morning. Partly to mostly cloudy Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Wind Discussion: Winds during the late morning and afternoon hours will be generally less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions. During the night through midmorning hours, winds will be generally less than 5 mph with extended periods of near calm conditions.
Rain: Models this afternoon look a little brighter as far as any upcoming chance of rain goes. A cold front will move through the valley probably sometime Monday night for what appears to be a decent chance of showers anytime from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning. As far as amounts are concerned, light precipitation is anticipated, perhaps .10 at most with the greatest possibility being north of Fresno County. Dry weather will continue Tuesday night and through Wednesday. A second system will dive southeastward from near Vancouver Island late Wednesday and will move into the Great Basin just east of the Sierra Nevada Thursday. The chance of snow showers over the Sierra looks halfway decent, but at this point the chance of rain for the valley is low.
Frost: A veil of high, thin clouds is over the valley this afternoon. These clouds are rotating around the far east side of upper level high pressure currently off shore. I do not believe these clouds will have much of an affect on slowing down the radiational cooling process, so temperatures may be 1 to 2 degrees colder tonight at most locations, but will bottom out in the range we’ve become accustomed to this November with widespread low to mid 30s and isolated territories in the upper 20s. the inversion tonight will again be good with temperatures at 34 feet being 5 to 8 degrees warmer at most locations. Friday morning will be similar, possibly 1 to 2 degrees warmer. We will have some above freezing temperatures next week, however. Bear in mind, though, that the air mass sliding in next week is very cold with lows possibly in the upper 20s to lower 30s.
