Forecast

November 26, 2022 afternoon report

November 26, 2022

A weak trough of low pressure moved through the Great Basin this morning with the trailing portion of the trough passing through central California with nothing but a few clouds. Weak upper level high  pressure has followed, meaning that the prevailing air mass did not change all that much. Temperatures are a bit cooler this afternoon with the exception of Bakersfield which is a tad warmer. The next system will take a similar path, diving into the Great Basin, the air mass behind this system is relatively cold but nothing unusual for late November. Yet another system will rapidly move through Thursday into Friday. This one appears to be somewhat stronger and is also moving southward further west. Theoretically, it would spread precipitation into central California. Quantitative precipitation estimates for this system aren’t very encouraging with totals near .10 as far south as Fresno County and just a few hundredths in the south valley. Glimpsing at the pattern for next week, another low will move through about next Sunday with a very cold air mass behind it. This is just one model for now and we’re talking 8 or 9 days out, so nothing serious as of yet. However, when I see a model such as the one for next week, it wakes me up enough to send a mention of it your way for possible planning purposes. Again, this is just one model run on one model, so stay tuned.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Wednesday night, possibly mostly to partly cloudy in Kern and southeastern Tulare County through midmorning Sunday. Partly cloudy Thursday. Increasing cloudiness late Thursday and Thursday night leading to a chance of light showers Friday. Mostly to partly cloudy Friday night and Saturday morning. Clearing Saturday afternoon.

Wind Discussion:  Winds through this evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 10 mph with locally stronger gusts. Winds later tonight through Tuesday will be generally at or less than 10 mph late mornings and afternoons with periods of near calm conditions and at or less than 5 mph with extended periods of near calm conditions during the later night and morning hours through Tuesday.

Rain: Expect dry weather through Thursday. There will be a chance later Thursday night through Friday. Some quantitative precipitation estimates for the Friday event don’t exactly look encourage. they show generally no more than .10 from Fresno County north, perhaps a bit more in Madera County, sloping to just a few hundredths in the south valley. There may be another chance of showers around Sunday of next week. we’ll work on that in the coming days.

Frost:  Even though temperatures this afternoon are a bit cooler than in previous days, dew points are similar and range in the 30s this afternoon. We’re back to the same old scenario in overnight low temperatures. The cloud cover that moved through parts of the valley this morning has moved out of the region and won’t be much of a factor tonight. We may see some upsloping cloud cover against the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi Mountains tonight. If this occurs at all, it would temperatures in those areas above freezing. Coldest river bottom type locations tonight will be near 25 or 30 with most other locations again in the low to mid 30s. hillsides will lbe above freezing. The inversion won’t be quite as strong tonight, but will still be fairly decent with temperatures at 34 feet generally from 3 to 7 degrees warmer. Expect similar conditions Monday through Wednesday. Increasing cloud cover toward Friday morning may end this long siege of below freezing overnight temperatures. We’ll see how this plays out in the coming days.
