Forecast

December 5, 2022 afternoon report

December 5, 2022

The sun has finally broken through over much of the valley this afternoon. There are still a few isolated light showers, mainly near the foothills. Those will end shortly after sunset. The center of circulation of a weak area of low pressure remains over northern California this afternoon. Models indicate one more weak disturbance will rotate in through the low and across the valley Tuesday through Tuesday night for a chance of light showers. This is a weak impulse and no more than a tenth of an inch is expected at any given location. weak high pressure will begin to fill in from the west Wednesday and dominate the pattern into Friday.

Models indicate that a cold low will drop southward out of the Gulf of Alaska and into California this weekend. There remains a great deal of differences between models as far as intensity and timing go. It appears rain will spread as far south as a Monterey/Stockton line Friday then over the remainder of the valley Saturday into Sunday. Models also show the main dynamics of this storm are aimed at northern California, but with some luck, most locations should pick up some measurable precipitation.

Forecast: partly cloudy tonight with areas of fog and low clouds developing after midnight. Variable cloudiness Tuesday and Tuesday night with a chance of light showers. Mostly clear to partly cloudy Wednesday into Friday with fog and low clouds during the later night and morning hours. Increasing cloudiness Friday leading to a chance of showers Friday afternoon and night. Showers will become likely Saturday and Saturday night, mainly from Fresno County north. Partly to mostly cloudy later Sunday afternoon with Monday with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds.

Woodlake 38/58/39/57 Hanford 40/57/40/55 Orosi 37/57/38/56

Wind Discussion: Winds during the later morning and afternoon hours will be generally at or less than 18 mph and variable in nature. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light and variable with extended periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: There are still a few isolated showers out there this afternoon. All in all, however, we can pound the last nail to what was a good precipitation event for central California. A weak disturbance will move through Tuesday through Tuesday evening for a chance of light showers. However, this time around, any location that does pick up precipitation will likely record no more than a tenth of an inch. Dry weather will prevail Wednesday into Friday then the chance of rain will begin to pick up again late Friday through Saturday. Models are showing differences in timing, but if you average them out, it looks like late Friday into Sunday. The best dynamics will be over northern California, but with a little luck, precipitation will be tallied in each valley county. Models have backed off on the possibility of more rain about a week from tomorrow.

Frost:  All locations will be above 32 degrees tonight, but possibly just slightly above in the coldest locations. Most, if not all, locations will be above 32 Wednesday, as well. It’s possible coldest locations Thursday and Friday could dip into the lower 30s. however, with relatively high dew points and abundant soil moisture, save conditions will prevail. A trough of low pressure from the Gulf of Alaska will be moving through with above freezing temperatures over the weekend. Local frost may occur early next week, but there is by no means any projection for particularly cold weather.
