Forecast

January 19, 2023 afternoon report

January 19, 2023

There are a few lingering light showers in Kern County and southeast Tulare County which will end over the next hour or two. Otherwise, skies north of Tulare County are mostly clear. Northwesterly winds are moving down the center and west side of the valley. They will continue to regenerate upslope clouds against the valley facing slopes of the surrounding mountains through much of the night tonight. Where skies remain relatively clear, especially from Fresno County north, pockets of frost will be possible tonight. In the bigger picture, low pressure is centered over southcentral Nevada while upper level high pressure is building over the eastern Pacific and will ridge into western Canada over the next 36 hours or so. Meanwhile, that low over Nevada and the off shore high will generate a north/northwest flow over California and will pump cold air in from the north, setting the stage for some frosty mornings, especially beginning Saturday. This northerly flow will continue into next week, resulting in below average temperatures. However, the high off shore will block any further storminess from moving into California. Fog will be the other forecast challenge for the coming week. fog will be patchy tonight due to wind conditions and cloud cover, but will be on the increase over the weekend. In fact, for much of the coming week, the annual race between frost and fog will be apparent. There will be a warm air inversion developing above the valley floor which will favor increasing fog as the days go by.

Forecast: Mostly cloudy in Kern County and much of Tulare County tonight. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy elsewhere. Becoming mostly clear Friday through Sunday with increasing amounts of morning fog and low clouds Saturday and Sunday. Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday with areas of night and morning fog and low clouds.

Wind Discussion: Winds this evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph along the center and west side of the valley with stronger gusts. Winds over much of Kern and Tulare counties will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts through this evening. Winds later tonight will be out of the northwest at 5 to 10 mph. Winds Friday through Sunday will generally be at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: Expect dry weather for the next week to possibly ten days.

Frost:  Coldest locations tonight will chill down to 30 to 32 in river bottom and similar locations with a slight chance of upper 20s in frost pockets. From Saturday through Monday morning, widespread temperatures of 29 to 33 can be expected with the coldest locations down to 27 to 29 in unprotected locations. A north/northwest flow has now developed over California and it is pumping cold air in from the north. Variations on this theme will continue for the next four or five days or so, resulting in at least areas of frost. Fog will continue to be the wild card in  the coming days. The blessing for tonight is upslope clouds banking up against the north facing slopes of the Tehachapi and the west facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada, which will maintain cloud cover over Kern County and much of Tulare County overnight. We anticipate that Saturday through Sunday mornings will be relatively cloud free, allowing temperatures at most locations to reach their threshold. Some moderation will occur after Tuesday, especially during the day, but even then local frost is anticipated.
