May 2, 2023 report

May 2, 2023 am

Summary: The center of circulation of a very cold upper low is no more than 150 miles to our west this morning. The freezing level taken overnight over Oakland has dropped all the way down to 4,600 feet and 6,500 feet over Vandenburg. This indicates a cold pool of air is over central California. As of 6:00am, light rain was being reported at Hanford, Fresno, Modesto, and Stockton. However, most of the showers at this hour are over northern California. The low is not forecast to move much over the next 48 hours, so the chance for mainly light showers will continue through Thursday. We cannot rule out a chance of isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours due to the intense daytime heating effect interacting with a cold pool of air aloft. The chance of showers will decrease Thursday night with dry weather over the weekend. Even though temperatures will warm somewhat Saturday and Sunday, readings will remain somewhat below average. Models for next week are still inconclusive. Some show a new low moving across northern and central California about a week from tomorrow for a chance of showers at least over the mountains. There’s no return on any model to a return to early summer type weather.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness through Thursday night with a risk of showers through Thursday, diminishing Thursday night. Partly cloudy Friday through Tuesday..

Two Week Outlook:  May 9 through May 14: This model continues the trend of below average temperatures for central California. However, any precipitation is projected to remain far to our north for mainly dry conditions.

May:  This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures

May, June, July:  This  model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months.. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season,, it means little anyway.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be variable to 15 mph at times through Thursday. Stronger gusts are possible near showers and thunderstorms. Winds Friday will be generally no  more than 12 mph and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.

Rain Discussion: The risk of showers will continue through Thursday, diminishing Thursday night. The precipitation pattern will be quite spotty with most locations picking up no more than a tenth to a quarater of an inch. Heavier amounts will be possible should thunderstorms develop. Small hail will also accompany any thunderstorm activity. Dry weather will prevail Friday through at least Tuesday. After Tuesday, the forecast is muddy as a possible low tracs through northern and central California around Wednesday of next week. for now, we’ll project dry conditions for the valley.
