Summary: A trough of low pressure extends from the Pacific Northwest to Arizona and is moving eastward. The air aloft above California is still relatively cold. The freezing level at Vandenburg is just 6,500 feet. That will rapidly rise as upper level high pressure off shore begins to build inland Thursday. The off shore ridge will build northeastward into the Pacific Northwest and even southwest Canada by Saturday. This will result in early summer type temperatures this weekend and early next week. models show an interesting feature developing this weekend. As an upper low over Utah and Colorado begins to retrograde westward, eventually moving into northern and central California by Sunday, the result will be scattered showers and thunderstorms over the mountain areas and possibly even out over the foothills. This low will eventually move off shore and will stay several hundred miles off shore for much of next week. models continue to indicate there will be a large ridge of high pressure over the western states through next weekend for well above average temperatures and daily chances of showers and scattered thunderstorms over the high Sierra.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Saturday with a warming trend. Mostly clear to occasionally party cloudy Saturday night through Monday. mostly clear Tuesday through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook: May 16 through May 22: This model shows above average temperatures covering roughly the western third of the US and central California. There is also some indication that some kind of storm will affect the Desert Southwest and possibly central California.
May: This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures
May, June, July: This model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season, it means little anyway.
Wind Discussion: Winds will be mainly out of the northwest through Saturday at 8 to 15 mph afternoons and evenings and 5 to 7 mph nights and mornings with periods of near calm conditions.
Rain Discussion: Expect dry weather for the next week to 10 days. There is a minor caveat for the second half of the weekend and into next week. a low over the Great Basin will retrograde over northern and central California, setting off scattered showers and thunderstorms over the mountains. Typically, this type of pattern does not affect the valley. Still, we’ll be watching.
