March 18, 2023 report

May 18, 2023 am

Summary:  A blanket of upper level high pressure and its blanket of warm subsiding air continue to cover most of the western US and off shore. Highs of 99 were recorded yesterday afternoon at both Hanford and Lemoore for the hot spots in the valley with most other locations between 95 and 98. With a bit of luck, a modest cooling trend will begin Saturday as a weak trough of low pressure moves west to east across the western US. A few degrees of synoptic cooling will occur with readings in the low to mid 90s. There is a minimal chance that enough marine air will spill through the Delta and possibly other gaps and passes along the coast range to lower temperatures into the upper 80s. Currently, the depth of the marine layer at Monterey is only 1,100 feet with only a trickle of modified sea breeze moving through the Delta. So, expect mid to upper 90s again through Friday afternoon. Longer range models continue to show very much of a summer type pattern as readings will tease with the century mark again Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. we may see a modest cool down beginning Thursday of next week. the combination of rapidly melting snow through the Sierra Nevada and that trough moving inland well to our north may result in scattered showers and thunderstorms along the Sierra Nevada Friday through Monday.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday night. Mostly clear skies will continue Monday through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  May 24 through May 30  This model indicates temperatures will be close to average with near average precipitation, meaning the chance of precipitation will remain low.

May:  This model continues trends during the month of May that we saw in April. Pressures will be lower than average along the west coast, resulting in the chance of above average rainfall and below average temperatures

May, June, July:  This model doesn’t really move the needle either way for temperatures and rainfall over the next three months. being that we’re heading into the hot, dry season, it means little anyway.

Wind Discussion: Winds through Friday will be generally out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph, decreasing to less than 7 mph after midnight tonight. Winds Friday night through Sunday will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with local gusts to 25 mph along the west side.
