June 6, 2023 report

June 6, 2023 am

Summary: The center of circulation of a weak cut off low is right over Kern County at this hour. What little activity there is around the low is along the northern and western flanks with a few showers over the Sierra Nevada, the southern Coast Range, and an isolated shower over Kern County. Rainfall amounts on the valley floor have been generally just trace amounts. Short range model information indicates this storm won’t move very much over the next 12 hours, not moving into Nevada until Wednesday morning. Daytime heating, which is reaching its pinnacle as we move into the longest days of the year, will set off showers and thunderstorms over the mountainous terrain over southern California. An east/northeast flow around the center of circulation will nudge this activity over the valley floor this afternoon and evening. Even though most locations will receive little to no precipitation, it’s’ possible an isolated thunderstorm could drop as much as a tenth to a quarter of an inch. As the low continues to weaken Wednesday over Nevada, it will begin to lost its identity and will eventually be absorbed by a trough of ow pressure moving into the west over the weekend. The trough moving into the west over the weekend will sustain afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada with the remainder of central California being precipitation free. Models do show weak high pressure moving in from the west next week, so even though temperatures will return to the low to mid 90s, no real summer heat shows up on the weather horizon.

Forecast: Variable cloudiness through tonight with a continued risk of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Partly cloudy Wednesday. Mostly clear Wednesday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  June 12 through June 18  This model is showing a broad trough of low pressure over and along the west coast during this timeframe. This time of year, typically it doesn’t mean much so the chance of precipitation is slim to none. However, temperatures will be somewhat below seasonal average.

June:  Of course, this time of year, 30 and 90 day outlooks are virtually useless as they’re essentially the same every year. Basically light all day and hot and light all night and warm. Essentially for June, near average temperatures and dry..

June, July, August:  The 90 day summary outlook is the same this  year as it is every year. Generally dry with somewhat above average temperatures. The monsoon season hasn’t begun  yet, so we’ll start taking that more seriously down the road.

Wind Discussion: There will be periods through Friday where winds will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. local gusts to 20 mph will be possible, generally through tonight and mainly near showers.

Rain Discussion: There are some widely scattered showers out there this morning. As the daytime heating takes place, towering cumulous will begin to build over the mountains, some of which will result in showers and thunderstorms the east/northeast flow around this system will nudge some of this activity out over the foothills with a chance of some moving over the valley floor during the late afternoon to evening hours. The low will move into Nevada Wednesday and will weaken further, ending the precipitation threat. So, you can expect dry weather for the remainder of the week once this system passes with dry weather continuing through next week.
