June 30, 2023

Summary: Temperatures on the valley floor this morning are running anywhere from 3 to 9 degrees higher than 24 hours ago. Warming over the higher elevations just as pronounced. Sandberg at 4,100 feet is reporting a temperature of 73 degrees as of 4:00 am. Blue Canyon at 6,200 feet was reporting a temperature of 69 degrees. The balloon sounding over Oakland overnight was indicating a freezing level of 16,900 feet, which is by far the highest so far this year, as you might expect, this bubble of warm air has capped the marine layer at 1.100 feet. All this points to the fact it will be hot for the next five days with hottest readings on the valley floor ranging from 107 to 112. The center of circulation of the high is just off the central coast and will build inland through Monday. by Tuesday the highest pressure will begin to be suppressed southward by a weak trough of low pressure moving through the Pacific Northwest.  It’ll be Thursday or Friday before temperatures move back down to double digits. Temperatures next weekend will  generally range in the upper 90s..

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Tuesday. mostly clear and a little less hot Wednesday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 5 through July 11: This model indicates a weak trough of low pressure will be along the west coast. Typically, this pattern allows modified marine air to move down the valley. This should keep temperatures near to moderately below average with dry conditions continuing.

June:  Of course, this time of year, 30 and 90 day outlooks are virtually useless as they’re essentially the same every year. Basically, light all day and hot and dark all night and warm. Essentially for June, near average temperatures and dry.

June, July, August:  The 90 day summary outlook is the same this year as it is every year. Generally dry with somewhat above average temperatures. The monsoon season hasn’t begun yet, so we’ll start taking that more seriously down the road.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the afternoon through the late evening hours will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. locally stronger gusts are possible from the late morning through the late evening hours through Tuesday.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for at least the next week.

Mid afternoon dew points: Low to mid 50s. Kern: Low to mid 50s.
