July 14, 2023 report

July 14, 2023

Summary: Building high pressure extends from Texas on the east to off the southern California coast on the west. This high will strengthen over California over the next 72 hours. By Saturday, the axis of the high pressure system will be centered right over central California, leading to a sweltering heat wave. Any time you see readings near record territory this time of year, you know it’s going to cook with readings rising to the 108 to 111 readings Saturday to the h110 to 115 degree range Sunday and Monday. All time records are very difficult to break. For example, Fresno’s all time high is 115 and in Bakersfield it’s 118. if you’re working outdoors this weekend it would be wise to knock off no later than noon. Low temperatures will also be excessively warm, only cooling into the low to mid 80s in the major cities to the mid 70s elsewhere. By Tuesday, the high will show signs of migrating back towards the east, centering over the Four Corners region by Thursday. Some high clouds may begin to show up over the weekend as the clockwise rotation around the high pulls in a minor amount of monsoonal moisture. Temperatures will begin to lower on Tuesday, however models show California remaining near enough to the high for triple digit temperatures to continue, lowering into the 100 to 105 degree range. Some models indicate the high will shift further to the west again over the weekend which could lead to another round of extremely hot weather. I want to see more model continuity before making that call.,

Forecast: Clear and hot today. Mostly clear and extremely hot Saturday through Monday. mostly clear and hot Monday night through Friday.

Two Week Outlook:  July 21 through July 27: This model shows a typical summer pattern with monsoonal moisture working its way into the desert southwest and possibly southern California. Expect near average temperatures and dry conditions but with a chance of isolated thunderstorms over he summit of the

Sierra Nevada.

July:  Typically, this time of year there is absolutely nothing going on in the world of weather. Temperature forecasts are u main forecast challenge. For now, the usual dry conditions will prevail with temperatures near to marginally above average

July, August, September: The monsoon into the Desert Southwest and occasionally California is what we carefully watch this time of year, especially during August and September. This model is currently showing below average precipitation over Arizona and New Mexico. This indicates there will be less of a chance of the monsoon visiting California this summer. Temperature are expected to range above average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the late evening through the morning hours will generally be at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions. During the afternoon and evening, winds will be generally at or less than 15 mph with locally stronger gusts through Tuesday.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for at least the next week.
