July 17, 2023 report

July 17, 2023

Summary At 5:00 this morning,, the temperature at Fresno was 82 degrees and it was 87 at Bakersfield. Most ag locations were in the mid 70s. yesterday’s highs ranged from 106 at Visalia to 110 at Lemoore and Bakersfield. Temperature forecasting today will be a bit tricky due to in and out cloud cover from the monsoon. Strong upper level high pressure has migrated back into northeast Arizona. The clockwise flow around the high has turned the winds aloft out of the south which is transporting a minimal amount of monsoon moisture northward into southern and central California. Doppler radar was indicating some virga was falling over Kern County. This is rain falling but evaporating before it reaches the ground. If it seemed unusually uncomfortable, not only was it hot but humidity values were higher than they usually are with a heat wave with dewpoints in the low 60s at noon yesterday. Expect widespread triple digits today and through the remainder of the week. the strong upper high will settle in over the Four Corners region today through Thursday then will shift a bit more to the west and north over the weekend. Monsoon moisture will continue to rotate into California for the rest of the week, however deeper tropical moisture is not anticipated, just varying amounts of cloud cover from time to time.

Forecast: Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy through Tuesday and continued hot. Mostly clear and hot Tuesday night through Friday with occasional high clouds. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday through Monday and continued hot.

Two Week Outlook:  July 24 through July 30: This model shows a typical summer pattern with monsoonal moisture working its way into the desert southwest and possibly southern California. Expect near average temperatures and dry conditions but with a chance of isolated thunderstorms over he summit of the

Sierra Nevada.

July:  Typically, this time of year there is absolutely nothing going on in the world of weather. Temperature forecasts are the main forecast challenge. For now, the usual dry conditions will prevail with temperatures near to marginally above average

July, August, September: The monsoon into the Desert Southwest and occasionally California is what we carefully watch this time of year, especially during August and September. This model is currently showing below average precipitation over Arizona and New Mexico. This indicates there will be less of a chance of the monsoon visiting California this summer. Temperatures are expected to range above average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds during the late evening through the morning hours will generally be at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions. During the afternoon and evening, winds will be generally at or less than 15 mph with locally stronger gusts through        Thursday.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for at least the next week.

Mid afternoon dew points: Low to mid 50s. Kern: Low to mid 50s.
