August 8, 2023 report

August 8, 2023

Summary The leftovers of tropical storm Eugene are moving northward along the northern and central Baja peninsula. Really, all that’s left of Eugene is a large area of cloud cover which will begin to affect central California by Wednesday afternoon. Models also show a weak upper level low off the central coast Thursday through Sunday. There is a slight chance this low could combine with subtropical moisture moving in from the south and will cause a few sprinkles to occur over the valley floor anytime from Wednesday afternoon through this coming weekend. There will also be a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southern Sierra Nevada and possibly even the Kern County mountains and deserts. Temperature the next few days will be a bit tricky as they will depend on the amount of cloud cover. Somewhat below average temperatures can be expected Thursday through Sunday. Measurable rain at any given location is unlikely. Though trace amounts would not be a total surprise. Models for the first part of next week indicate a zone of high pressure from Texas to a second high off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. Above average temperatures can be expected from next Monday and lasting through much of next week.

Forecast Mostly clear skies through Wednesday morning. Partly cloudy Wednesday afternoon through Friday with a slight chance of sprinkles. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Friday afternoon through Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 14 through August 30   This model points to hot weather over the Pacific Northwest and northern California with above average temperatures over the remainder of California. Expect a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. Otherwise, dry conditions will prevail.

August:  This model indicates temperatures over the next 30 days will be near to slightly above seasonal averages. Dry weather will continue, although we will have to keep a watchful eye to the south for possible tropical activity.

August, September, October: This  model shows above average temperatures for much of the west, particularly the Desert Southwest. It also points to below average precipitation over the Desert Southwest, possibly meaning a less active monsoon season. The chance of precipitation for central California appears to be near average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons through late evening at 8 to 15 mph through today. Winds Tuesday through Thursday will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph. Gusts to 25 mph will be possible through Friday, mainly along the Interstate 5 corridor but locally elsewhere.

Rain Discussion: We are tracking tropical moisture from the remans of tropical storm Eugene. Satellite imagery is showing a great deal of cloudiness off the northern and central Baja coastline which is creeping northward and will begin to affect southern California today and tonight. A very weak upper low off the central coast will begin to draw this moisture into central California Wednesday through Friday. There may be enough convection in the atmosphere for a small chance of sprinkles from Wednesday afternoon through Friday. Measurable precipitation is unlikely on the valley floor. this moisture may affect central California through the weekend as a weak upper low remains off the  Pacific coast.
