August 9, 2023 report

August 9, 2023

Summary A weak trough of low pressure extends from off the coast of the Pacific Northwest southward to off the central California coast. In the meantime, remnants of tropical storm Eugene have spread as far north as Tulare County in the form of mid and high level clouds. A weak upper low will develop off the central California coast on Thursday and will potentially draw more moisture northward, resulting in a chance of sprinkles or even an isolated light shower. This feature will either be just off shore or over central California through early next week. there will be daily chances of isolated thunderstorms over the southern Sierra Nevada and the Kern County mountains and deserts through early next week. the marine layer has deepened all the way up to 2,600 feet and is moving into the valley. Temperatures will lower into the mid 90s today and into the lower 90s Thursday and Friday. Our next warming trend will begin Sunday as upper level high pressure will stretch from Texas back through California Monday through Wednesday of next week. widespread triple digit temperatures are likely beginning Monday and lasting through at least Thursday. Models show a large area of low pressure moving from western Canada and extending into central California next weekend for our next cooling trend.

Forecast Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy through Monday. there will be a slight chance of sprinkles or isolated showers beginning this afternoon and continuing through Monday. mostly clear Tuesday through Wednesday with occasional high clouds.

Two Week Outlook:  August 14 through August 30   This model points to hot weather over the Pacific Northwest and northern California with above average temperatures over the remainder of California. Expect a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. Otherwise, dry conditions will prevail.

August:  This model indicates temperatures over the next 30 days will be near to slightly above seasonal averages. Dry weather will continue, although we will have to keep a watchful eye to the south for possible tropical activity.

August, September, October: This  model shows above average temperatures for much of the west, particularly the Desert Southwest. It also points to below average precipitation over the Desert Southwest, possibly meaning a less active monsoon season. The chance of precipitation for central California appears to be near average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds today through this evening will be mainly out of the west to northwest at 8 to 15 mph at times with locally stronger gusts. During the night and morning hours winds will generally be at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Saturday.

Rain Discussion: There will be a slight chance of sprinkles or even an isolated very llight shower at any given time through Monday. the chance of measurable rain at any particular location is at or less than 10%. Where precipitation does fall only trace amounts can be expected. This risk will last through Monday due to a very weak upper low in the vicinity of central California through the weekend. For now, I’m going to leave the chance of sprinkles out of the forecast for Monday and beyond. These types of situations this time of year make me a bit nervous as these weak upper lows occasionally can add convection to the atmosphere to produce measurable rain.
