August 10, 2023 report

August 10, 2023

Summary  The remnants of Eugene have spread as far north as Fresno County. Doppler radar is depicting sprinkles or light showers over Kern County at this hour. They’ll work their way north over the course of the day. Even though raindrops are reaching the south valley floor, nothing measurable is anticipated at most locations. If measurable rain does fall, it will be no more than a few hundredths of an inch. Skies will begin clearing late tonight or early Friday as the moisture is tugged further towards the northeast into Nevada. Temperature forecasting may be hit and miss today due to cloud cover. Also, the marine layer is more than 2,000 feet deep and has spilled into the valley. High temperatures today will generally range in the upper 80s with a warming trend beginning Friday. By Sunday, a broad expanse of upper level high pressure will stretch from Texas northwestward to another high off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. A significant warming trend will begin as temperatures push the century mark as early as Sunday then level off into the 100 to 105 degree range Monday through Wednesday. A moderate cooling trend will begin Thursday as a low pressure system drops southward from the Pacific Northwest, deepening the marine layer and allowing it to move inland.

Forecast Variable cloudiness through tonight with a small chance of sprinkles or isolated light showers. Mostly clear Friday through Monday. mostly clear Monday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook:  August 14 through August 30   This model points to hot weather over the Pacific Northwest and northern California with above average temperatures over the remainder of California. Expect a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. Otherwise, dry conditions will prevail.

August:  This model indicates temperatures over the next 30 days will be near to slightly above seasonal averages. Dry weather will continue, although we will have to keep a watchful eye to the south for possible tropical activity.

August, September, October: This  model shows above average temperatures for much of the west, particularly the Desert Southwest. It also points to below average precipitation over the Desert Southwest, possibly meaning a less active monsoon season. The chance of precipitation for central California appears to be near average.

Wind Discussion:  Winds today through this evening will be mainly out of the west to northwest at 8 to 15 mph at times with locally stronger gusts. During the night and morning hours winds will generally be at or less than 8 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Sunday.

Rain Discussion: Remnants of former tropical storm Eugene are moving from south to north into the valley at this hour. Doppler radar is indicating sprinkles have moved over isolated locations in Kern County. The threat of precipitation will continue today. Measurable rain at any given location is very unlikely and if it does occur it would be no more than a few hundredths of an inch. Dry weather will return Saturday with the exception of the Sierra Nevada where thunderstorms are possible each afternoon through Tuesday. After today, dry weather will prevail Friday and will last through the following week.
