October 11, 2023 report

October 11, 2023

Summary   A trough of low pressure which yesterday moved through the Pacific Northwest and northern California has shifted into the Great Basin. Barometric pressure is considerably lower over Nevada than off shore California. The current altimeter reading at San Francisco  is at 29.86  inches of mercury while at Las Vegas the current pressure  is 29.48. this is creating a northwest push of air down the valley which has caused upslope clouds to form in Kern County and all the way north into portions of Tulare and Kings Counties. Currently, Meadows Field is reporting the cloud deck at 4,900 feet. A cooler air mass is moving down the valley with readings this afternoon only in the low to mid 70s. a weak ridge of high pressure will move in from the west tonight and Thursday, returning us to seasonal temperatures tomorrow and through the weekend. Over the weekend, a zonal flow will develop over the Pacific and into the Pacific Northwest and northern California. By late Sunday, upper level high pressure will have built along the west coast resulting in marginally above average temperatures Monday through Wednesday of next week. high pressure oriented from southwest to northeast will dominate our pattern for the latter part of next week and into the weekend. Dry weather will continue all the way through next week.

Forecast Mostly cloudy this morning in Kings, Tulare, and Kern Counties with mostly clear skies further north. Mostly clear tonight through Friday but remaining partly cloudy in Kern County through Friday morning. Mostly clear to possibly occasionally partly cloudy Saturday through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook:  October 18 through October 24  This model  shows a large upper high covering the eastern Pacific and the western 1/3, resulting in dry conditions and above average temperatures.

October:  This model indicates that October will be marginally warmer than average. It also points to above average precipitation from Texas to southern California. Central California will have a better than even chance of above average precipitation.

October, November, December  This model shows a marginal chance of above average temperatures over the next 90 days. There is no indication of above or below average precipitation through December. We will be dealing with a strong El Nino this winter. Whether or not that translates into abundant rainfall for central California remains to be seen.

Wind Discussion: A fairly steep difference in pressure exists between the coast and the Great Basin. This will generate winds out of the west to northwest at 10 to 20 mph through this evening. Gusts to 30 mph will be possible, mainly along the west side of Fresno, Merced, and Kings Counties. From late tonight through Saturday, winds will generally range between 5 and 12 mph with locally stronger gusts. There will be periods of near calm conditions, mainly during the night and morning hours.

Rain Discussion.  Expect dry conditions indefinitely.
