November 6, 2023/afternoon report

November 6, 2023

Summary:  As of  midday, a weak cold front was stretched from south of Lake Tahoe down to Monterey then out to sea. Along this front was a band of light showers moving through Monterey and Stanislaus Counties then into the Sierra Nevada. Light showers are also occurring over the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. That cold front will slowly work its way down the valley late today and tonight. Behind the front is a colder, relatively unsteady air mass which will cause mainly light showers to continue into Tuesday morning. As the trough shifts inland Tuesday, showers will continue along the Sierra Nevada but will end over the valley floor. drizzle may occur along the base of the Tehachapi Mountains due to upsloping. By Tuesday evening, a ridge of high pressure will be approaching the northern California coast then will shift inland Tuesday through Thursday night for seasonal temperatures.  The next trough of low pressure will move inland Friday and Friday night, however this system will be too weak to produce active weather. Models continue to point to a stronger ridge of high pressure building in from the west over the weekend, resulting in a warming trend with temperatures again rising into the 70s by Saturday. Both the ten day and two week models are suggesting a rather potent looking system will be off the northern California coast around the fifteenth through the seventeenth for a better chance at significant rain.

Forecast: Mostly cloudy from Fresno County north with a likelihood of light showers tonight into Tuesday morning. There will be a chance of light showers south of Fresno County through Tuesday morning. Partly cloudy Tuesday afternoon through early Wednesday morning. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Wednesday afternoon through Monday.

Winds: Winds this morning will be light and variable then will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 mph this afternoon. Winds tonight through Tuesday night will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. Winds Wednesday through Thursday will be generally at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: As of midday, a band of light showers was stretched across Santa Cruz and Stanislaus Counties along weak cold front. This front will sag slowly southward as the evening progresses, spreading light showers along the way. This system’s dynamics appear to be quite weak in the south valley so we’ll go with just a chance of light showers for Kings, Tulare, and Kern Counties through Tuesday morning. The likelihood of light showers will exist through the morning commute Tuesday from Fresno County north. These showers should be over by midday over all the lower elevations. Expect dry weather Tuesday afternoon through the end of the week and well into next week.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night through at least the next 7 to 10 days.
