January 26, 2024 report

January 26, 2024

Summary: Variable amounts of high clouds are overrunning a ridge of high pressure currently over California. This slowed the radiational cooling process enough last night to keep the fog from becoming too widespread. Forecast models maintain the ridge over central California through early next week. A warm air inversion is developing above the valley floor, however high clouds are expected to continue to overrun the high which will keep the fog at bay. We are still looking at a major weather pattern change beginning Tuesday. The high will begin to break down, allowing a mammoth trough of low pressure to extend from southern Alaska to southern California. Some models are showing an atmospheric river of air developing from west to east across southern California. This could potentially result in very heavy precipitation along the Sierra Nevada and substantial amounts of precipitation for the valley floor. models show a low  pressure system remaining just off the southern California coast from Thursday of next week to Monday of the following week for occasional periods of precipitation,

Forecast: Areas of night and morning fog and low clouds. Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy through Monday night. mostly cloudy Tuesday. Increasing cloudiness Tuesday night. rain becoming likely at times Tuesday through Friday.

Two Week Forecast:  February 1 through February : This model has done a 180 regarding temperatures during this period. Models now show a cold trough of low pressure engulfing much of the west. Therefore, expect below average temperatures for a change with an excellent chance of rain.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Monday.

Rain Dry weather will continue through Wednesday. A potentially very wet pattern will begin Wednesday of  next week. models vary a great deal on how all of this will play out. A couple of models are showing the formation of a atmospheric river of air into the southern half of  California next Wednesday and Thursday. Most models place a  deep low just off the northern California coast next weekend and into the following week. The colder sector of the storm will arrive next weekend for a continuation of showers and possible thunderstorms.
