January 27, 2024 report

January 27, 2024

Summary: upper-level high pressure is centered off the southern California coast this morning. the high is projected on models to build a ridge northward into the Pacific Northwest. High clouds will continue to overrun the top of the high over the next 24 hours. Most of the high clouds will leave Sunday through Monday. the high will reach its pinnacle Monday through Tuesday, driving temperatures to record levels as we enjoy low to mid 70s. All this is ahead of a major trough of low pressure which, by Thursday, will stretch from Alaska all the way down the coast to southern California. This will set up a multi day storm event with periods of showers beginning late Wednesday and possibly lasting through next weekend. Temperatures will eventually cool down by Friday and Saturday of next week as a pool of cold air settles over California due to the possibility of a cut off low over the Golden State next weekend.

Forecast: Areas of low clouds and fog Sunday and Monday mornings. Otherwise it will be mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy. Mostly clear Tuesday after areas of fog and  low clouds. Partly cloudy Tuesday night after areas of morning fog and low clouds. Increasing cloudiness Wednesday. A chance of showers Wednesday night. showers likely Thursday and at times through Saturday.

Two Week Forecast:  February 1 through February : This model has done a 180 regarding temperatures during this period. Models now show a cold trough of low pressure engulfing much of the west. Therefore, expect below average temperatures for a change with an excellent chance of rain.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday.

Rain Expect dry weather through at least Tuesday night and quite possibly much of Wednesday. The chance of precipitation will increase as Wednesday night wears on with a good chance of showers Thursday and each day through next weekend. Rainfall amounts from Wednesday night through next Sunday could possibly be between one and two inches north of Kern County and as much as an inch over the valley portion of Kern County. The two week model which runs from the third through the nineth predicts a 70% to 80% chance of above average precipitation.

Frost: Models are still suggesting colder weather beginning next Friday and Saturday, fortunately, along with the colder temperatures will come unsettled weather. So for now, no big freeze is expected. Stay  tuned for later forecast packages, though, as we are a week away from this change.
