Summary: Low clouds and fog were rapidly expanding through many areas of the central and south valley as of 5:00am. Elsewhere, fog was expanding over areas of Merced County. Upper level high pressure has shifted a bit further east this morning and is centered over western Nevada. The high will continueu to move towards the Rocky Mountain region ahead of a major weather shift which will bring substantial amounts of rain to the valley. Some locations may see record high temperatures both today and Tuesday. Assuming the fog and low clouds burn off in a timely manner, readings will top out in the low to mid 70s. rain will begin to spread in from the west possibly as early as late Wednesday afternoon, spreading over the rest of the region Wednesday night. models continue to show a nice fetch of subtropical moisture feeding into this storm from waters north of Hawaii. Some quantitative precipitation estimates between Wednesday and Friday along the coast range north of San Simeon area as much as 8 to 10 inches and as much as 3 to 4 inches along the Sierra Nevada north of Tulare County. Unsettled weather will continue on and off through the weekend as the colder sector of the storm arrives, lowering snow levels down to 4,000 feet or so. The two week outlook continues to indicate a 70 percent chance of above average rainfall through February 11.

Forecast: Areas of dense fog and low clouds this morning. clearing in most areas this afternoon. Mostly clear tonight with areas of fog forming late. Areas of fog and low clouds Tuesday morning, otherwise it will become partly cloudy late. Increasing cloudiness Tuesday night. cloudy Wednesday with a chance of rain by late afternoon. Rain likely at times Wednesday night through Thursday night. a chance of showers at times Friday through Monday.

Two Week Forecast:  February 4 through February  10: This model has done a 180 regarding temperatures during this period. Models now show a cold trough of low pressure engulfing much of the west. Therefore, expect below average temperatures for a change with an excellent chance of rain.

Winds:  Winds will be generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Tuesday night. by early Wednesday, winds will become out of the east or southeast at 8 to 15 mph with local gusts to 25 mph possible. Winds Wednesday through Thursday will be mainly out of the southeast at 10 to 20 mph with stronger gusts possible.

Rain Dry weather will continue through most of the day Wednesday. It’s possible rain may show up as early as Wednesday afternoon along the west side, spreading over the rest of the valley Wednesday and continuing on and off through Thursday night. Showers will continue Friday with a break on Saturday. The chance of rain will begin to increase once again Sunday. Rainfall amounts along the east side north of Kern County should tally  up to around an inch to a half an inch or so. Along western Fresno and kings Counties, amounts will generally range between .60 and .90. rainfall amounts for the valley portion of Kern County will be a half inch or less. Rain will continue on and off next week as well.

Frost: All locations will be above freezing through Friday morning. the colder sector of a Pacific storm will arrive Friday and Friday night. even though this storm is cold, it is also quite active with periods of showers from time to time. For Saturday through Monday, lows will dip into the mid 30s to the lower 40s. If we have a clear night  sandwiched  into this time frame, low 30s will be possible in the very coldest regions.

Mid afternoon dew points: Low to mid 50s.  Kern: Low to mid 50s.
