April 9, 2024 report

April 9, 2024

Summary  The center of circulation of a fairly strong upper high is just west of Monterey this morning. The latest balloon sounding over Oakland indicates the freezing level has jumped up to 10,800 feet. That’s roughly 5,000 feet higher than 24 hours ago. This indicates a warm bubble of subsiding air is moving over California. Temperatures will push 80 in the warmest locations this afternoon and by Thursday warmest locations on the valley floor will be teasing with the 90 degree mark. The high will begin to give way Friday night in response to a northeast low pressure system which is projected to hug the coastline as it moves southward along the California coast this weekend. Not only will this feature lower temperatures dramatically over the weekend, it will also be accompanied by a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms. By Monday, the low will be moving into Arizona, ending the chance of precipitation. some models indicate another low will move into northern California by the middle of next week. However, for now it appears any chance of precipitation will be confined to the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada.

Forecast mostly clear and warmer through Friday. Increasing cloudiness Friday night leading to a chance of showers Saturday through Sunday. Partly cloudy Sunday night through Tuesday.

Two Week Forecast:  April 15 through April 21: This model is indicating a fairly dominant ridge of high pressure will be over California. The chance of rain appears to be very low  during this period while temperatures will be above average.

Thirty Day Report: This model gives equal chances of above and below average temperatures for the month of April. The chance of precipitation is slightly above average for the month.

Ninety Day Report: As we enter the dry season, this model predicts precipitation will be above or below average. There is no real trend to grab onto, so temperatures are expected to be near seasonal average.

Winds: Winds through Friday will be variable and no more than 10 mph. Periods of near calm conditions can be expected, mainly during the night and morning hours.

Rain: Dry weather will continue through Friday. Models vary on the strength and potential path of a low pressure system this weekend. It appears the system will hug the coastline as it moves southward just off shore. By Saturday night, the low should be just west of Monterey. In this position, the counterclockwise circulation around the low will move bands of showers inland over California. The path of the storm will determine the possibility of thunderstorms Saturday and possibly Sunday afternoon. Rainfall amounts will be spotty, averaging .20 to .40. more is possible if thunderstorms develop. Dry weather will begin Monday, lasting well into next week.

Mid afternoon dew points: Low to mid 40s. Kern: Low to mid 40s.
