April 10, 2024 report

April 10, 2024

Summary  There are two main features we’re looking at this morning. The first is a center of high pressure just off the central coast. The second is a developing low just off the northeast Pacific. It’s the high center that will influence our weather through Friday with mostly clear skies and well above average temperatures. Temperatures will push 90 degrees in the warmer locations on the valley floor Thursday and Friday. The low in the northeast Pacific will drop southward to a position just off the northern California coast Friday night and just to the west of the central coast Saturday. Models are more bullish this morning on the potential for rain for the valley with snow above 4,500 feet in the southern Sierra Nevada. There is also the potential for thunderstorms Saturday afternoon as a pool of cold, unstable air moves in overhead and interacts with the daytime heating process. Some of the high resolution models this morning are indicating between a quarter and a half inch of precipitation is possible on the valley floor with over a foot of new snow over the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. The low will push eastward through southern California Sunday. By Tuesday, a weaker low will be moving into the Pacific Northwest then into northern California Wednesday. However, for now it appears any precipitation will be confined to the higher elevation of the Sierra Nevada.

Forecast Mostly clear skies through Friday. Increasing cloudiness Friday night leading to a chance of showers, mainly after midnight. Periods of showers Saturday and Saturday night. a chance of thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening. Partly cloudy Sunday and Sunday night. Mostly clear Monday through Wednesday.

Thirty Day Report: This model gives equal chances of above and below average temperatures for the month of April. The chance of precipitation is slightly above average for the month.

Ninety Day Report: As we enter the dry season, this model predicts precipitation will be above or below average. There is no real trend to grab onto, so temperatures are expected to be near seasonal average.

Winds Friday night and Saturday will be mainly out of the northwest at 10 to 20 mph. Gusts over 30 mph will be possible near heavier showers and thunderstorms.

Rain: Dry weather will continue through Friday. A chance of showers will begin to increase Friday night, especially from Merced County north. Showers will be widespread Saturday and Saturday night. A chance of thunderstorms exists Saturday through the evening hours. Models this morning are considerably more bullish on the chance of measurable rain. Some high resolution models indicate as much as one quarter to one half inch is possible on the valley floor. Higher amounts are possible near any thunderstorm activity. Dry weather will return Sunday and will continue for the next several days.
