Forecast

June 5, 2018/report

June 5, 2018

Summary: Temperatures this morning are anywhere from 8 to 15 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago north of Kern County.  In Kern County, readings are 2 to 4 degrees cooler than at the same time yesterday.  A low center and weak trough of low pressure is establishing itself over and off the west coast and will be the dominant player all the way through the coming weekend.  The hot conditions of the past few days are now history as temperatures this afternoon will be roughly 10 degrees cooler than yesterday.

Models project a 9 mb difference in pressure between San Francisco and Las Vegas.  This will tug more marine air through the Delta and through the gaps and passes along the west side, lowering temperatures near to marginally below average.  There are some high and mid level clouds embedded within the southwest flow aloft which will dot the sky from time to time, but no active weather is foreseen, even over the Sierra Nevada.

On Monday or Tuesday of next week, we should see a transition between the relatively mild conditions of this week and possibly hotter temperatures next week.  Most models this morning show the trough moving into the northern Rockies, allowing the eastern Pacific high to begin to engulf much of the western U.S.  It’s difficult at this time to discern how far above average temperatures may or may not progress, but mid to upper 90s are likely by mid week next week.

Forecast: Other than occasional high clouds, it will be mostly clear through Thursday.  Mostly clear skies will continue Thursday night through Monday.  Mostly clear Monday night and Tuesday with a warming trend.

Two Week Outlook:  June 12 through June 18:  This model shows a trough of low pressure moving into the western states and remaining for a few days.  Temperatures under this pattern would lower to near seasonal values.  There will be no chance of precipitation.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds: Winds will be out of the northwest at 5 to 15 MPH at times through Friday with locally stronger gusts, mainly in the afternoons and evenings.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions indefinitely

Afternoon Dew Points Today: Mid to upper 30s.  Kern: Mid to upper 30s.
