June 11, 2018

Summary: Temperatures this morning are already up three to six degrees over yesterday’s readings at this time.  Marine air will quickly mix out today as building high pressure aloft sends temperatures well above average as early as Tuesday afternoon.  There are plenty of signs out there of significant warming above the valley floor.  Sandberg near the top of the ridge route is eleven degrees warmer than 24 hours ago while Blue Canyon at 5,200 feet is up thirteen.  The freezing level is now up to 15,200 feet.

The high will reach its pinnacle Wednesday with most, if not all,  locations eclipsing the 100 degree mark.  The next cooling trend will begin Thursday as a new trough of low pressure develops over the Pacific Northwest, digging a dry trough southward into northern and central California.  This will increase the on shore flow, again sending marine air over the Coast Range and into the valley with temperatures possibly near average by Friday and marginally below average over the weekend.

Of interest also is Hurricane Bud which is currently off the south central Mexico coastline.  Bud is expected to be near the southern tip of Baja Friday and possibly over the southern Baja peninsula Saturday.  However, the above mentioned trough will have the winds over central California out of the west/southwest, ensuring moisture from Bud will not progress this far north.  The northern limit of precipitation could reach as far north as the Imperial Valley, but even that may be a stretch.

Longer term, high pressure will be more dominant next week than lower pressure, although no excessive heat is anticipated.

Two Week Outlook:  June 18 through June 24:  Believe it or not, this model is suggesting moisture will move into the Desert Southwest and the southern half of California.  Considering the time of year, we must view this with some skepticism.  Nevertheless, it is possible the monsoon season may get underway not to mention the possible development of tropical storms over the equatorial Pacific.  Expect above average temperatures.

June:  As we head into the summer months, it appears this June will be mostly dry, as is typical.  Models are projecting higher than average pressure patterns during the month so look for temperatures, generally speaking, to be above average.

June, July, August:  All summers are hot in the San Joaquin Valley, and typically very dry.  This summer will be no exception.  If there’s any tendency on modeling at all it would be that upper level high pressure would be marginally stronger than average with temperatures also running marginally above average.  The monsoon season will begin in several weeks so it’s impossible to tell it will be an active one this year.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Winds: winds will be at or less than 15 MPH through Wednesday and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.  Winds Thursday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH along the west side.
