Forecast

July 10, 2019/report

 July 10, 2019

Summary: Temperatures are running generally 3 to 6 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago.  The air aloft is also warming as the freezing level overnight at Vandenberg had risen to 15,800 feet.  As evidence of strong upper level high pressure building over the Desert Southwest, Las Vegas is reporting a freezing level of 16,400 feet.  Currently, a high center is located near the Arizona/New Mexico border and will move a tad further north over the Four Corners region Thursday and will remain there through the weekend.  California will end up on the western and northwestern flank of the high, putting us  under a warm bubble of subsiding air.  Temperatures will warm a few degrees today, a few more on Thursday, then widespread triple digits will be the norm Friday through Sunday.  Saturday looks to be the hottest day with readings settling into the 104-108 degree range with most of the hotter locations in the valley portion of Kern County.

For the first time this summer, the winds aloft will become southerly.  However, models are depicting this flow as generally dry so the chance of isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada this weekend will be minimal.

The marine layer along the coast has shrunk back to only 800 feet, so even though a weak onshore flow prevails, the marine machine will be shut down for the next four or five days.

Early next week, a weak trough of low pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest, weakening the high and turning winds aloft from southerly to southwesterly.  By Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures will level off into the upper 90s, which is  more or less typical for this time of year as averages are now at about their pinnacle before they start to slowly move down in late July.

Forecast: Mostly clear and warmer through Thursday.  Mostly clear and hot Friday through Sunday.  Mostly clear and a bit cooler Monday through Wednesday.

Two Week Outlook: July 17 through July 23:  This model shows the main heat belt from the Rocky Mountains eastward while a weak trough is along the west coast.  Since this trough is unimpressive, temperatures will remain near average with no chance of precipitation.

July: July, of course, is typically hot and if this model has any credence, it will be hotter than average.  With a dominant Four Corners high and a trough over the middle of the country, usual July dry conditions will prevail.

July, August, September: This model is indicating that the western U.S., including California, will experience above average temperatures overall during the mid to late summer period.  Precipitation is expected to be near average, which, of course, is very little and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

Winds:  Winds will be generally out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 MPH and 3 to 8 MPH during the later night and morning hours.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
