Forecast

July 26, 2019/report

July 26, 2019

Summary: The latest wave of monsoonal moisture has now moved northward out of the area.  There are still a few showers over the back country of Mariposa and Madera Counties and they will shortly move into Nevada.  Even though the bulk of the moisture has moved out, enough mid and high level moisture combined with intense daytime heating will form isolated thunderstorms over the back country of the Sierra Nevada.  With a developing west/southwest flow aloft, any action over the Sierra Nevada will be nudged to the Owens Valley side of the mountain range.

In the big picture, the Four Corners high has drifted to the southwest and is now over western Arizona and will continue its movement into northern Baja and southern California this weekend.  Any further monsoonal moisture will be forced underneath the high through northwest Mexico then westward into the waters off of northern Baja.  This means generally clear skies and hot conditions for central California.  Widespread triple digits will continue and, with the proximity of the center of circulation, temperatures will soar into the 105 to 111 degree range Sunday, the hottest day of this heatwave.

By late Monday, the  high will begin to shift eastward again and by Tuesday will end up over Colorado and New Mexico.  This will allow a very weak trough of low pressure to move into the Pacific Northwest and northern California, weakening pressures aloft with a cooling trend starting Monday.

For much of next week, temperatures will likely end up near average which is the upper 90s this time of year.  The flow aloft by midweek may become south/southwest which could bring a minimal amount of monsoonal moisture into central California for occasional high clouds and a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the high Sierra.

Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Monday.  Mostly clear with a slow cooling trend Tuesday through Friday.

Two Week Outlook: August 2 through August 8:  Overall, upper level high pressure remains anchored over the Desert Southwest with an active monsoon  moving into the Desert Southwest, the Great Basin and the Sierra Nevada.  There’s always a slight chance of sprinkles during the monsoon season, but overall, temperatures will remain dry with above average temperatures.

July: July, of course, is typically hot and if this model has any credence, it will be hotter than average.  With a dominant Four Corners high and a trough over the middle of the country, usual July dry conditions will prevail.

July, August, September: This model is indicating that the western U.S., including California, will experience above average temperatures overall during the mid to late summer period.  Precipitation is expected to be near average, which, of course, is very little and there’s no reason to believe otherwise.

Winds:  Winds will be generally in the 5 to 12 MPH range and mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings.  Periods of near calm conditions can be expected nights and mornings through Monday.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to ten days.
