Forecast

August 8 2019/report

August 8, 2019

Summary: It will be noticeably cooler beginning today.  The first of two low pressure systems will  move inland through Santa Barbara and Kern Counties this afternoon.  The low will be marked by some mid and high level clouds but little else.  Pressures aloft are falling so that in itself will result in synoptic cooling.  The marine layer is also moving through the Delta and Pacheco Pass where winds are gusting between 20 and 30 MPH at each location.  Mid 90s appears to be a good bet for the central part of the valley while Kern County, which is last to receive the marine benefit, will still struggle into the upper 90s.

The upper high that resulted in triple digits for the past few days, is shifting eastward and will center over Texas by Friday evening.  This will allow a relatively strong for the season low pressure system to move into northern California Friday night and Saturday, resulting in a strong onshore flow, flooding the valley with modified marine air.  Saturday will likely be the coolest day this week as readings may not reach the 90 degree mark then and possibly Sunday as well.  By Monday, the low will weaken and move off to the northeast.  That will allow a zone of upper level high pressure to stretch all the way from the southeast U.S. and connect with another high center well off the southern California coast.

By Tuesday, temperatures will again push into the lower 100s.  Some models project another trough of low pressure will move into the Pacific Northwest and northern California next weekend, possibly leading into another cool down.  Other models, though, show this system remaining off shore.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Sunday with a cooling trend.  Mostly clear Sunday night through Thursday and warmer.

Two Week Outlook: August 15 through August 21:  this model actually shows much of the U.S. enjoying below average temperatures.  The exception is the western one-third where temperatures will be marginally above average.  No precipitation is expected at this time.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest later today at 5 to 15 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH, mainly along the west side.  Winds Friday and Saturday will be out of the northwest at 10 to 15 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH, possibly exceeding 30 MPH along the Interstate 5 corridor.  Winds Sunday will decrease to around 5 to 15 MPH with locally stronger gusts.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for the next week to ten days.
