August 29, 2019/report

August 29, 2019

Summary: The marine layer which was less than 1,000 feet 48 hours ago, has jumped up to 3,800 feet at Monterey.  With a deep marine layer, modified marine air is surging into the valley.  For example, the winds at Pacheco Pass were sustained at 23 MPH, gusting to 35.  As the modified sea breeze moves down the valley, temperatures will come down with readings falling into the mid to upper 90s.  Kern County will be the last to see the benefits of this change, but even there, readings should be sub 100.

The high, which was located over northern and central California the past few days, has been suppressed into Arizona and southern California where the heat will continue.  Pressures over northern and central California have lowered and will continue to be through the weekend.

The next change in the overall pattern will begin during the second half of the weekend as a high center takes shape over the Four Corners region of the Desert Southwest.  That will turn the winds aloft out of the south which will move monsoonal moisture into southern California as early as Sunday with possibly enough mid and high level moisture for a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and the mountains and deserts of southern California.  Partly cloudy skies can be expected at times Monday through Thursday of next week.  By Friday, a low will move into northern California, turning the winds aloft out of the southwest and ending the monsoon for the time being with possibly a cooling trend by next weekend.

Forecast: Clear skies through Sunday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday night through Thursday.

Two Week Outlook: September 5 through September 11:  This model is showing a reasonably decent chance of monsoonal moisture working its way northward into central and southern California.  Typically this pattern sets off afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada and, on rare occasions, sprinkles or isolated showers over the valley.  Overall, most locations will remain dry.  This regime will result in generally above average temperatures.

August: This model projects fairly persistent upper level high pressure over the Desert Southwest.  The monsoon shows up, as it typically does this time of year, but it generally produces little to no precipitation over the valley.  The bottom line, temperatures will be marginally above average with typically dry conditions.

August, September, October: The 90 day outlook doesn’t really give strong indicators one way or the other.  As far as precipitation is concerned, this model is projecting near average totals for the next three months.  This model also projects above average temperatures for much of the western U.S.

Winds:  Winds during the afternoons and evenings will be out of the northwest at 8 to 15 MPH with local gusts to 25 MPH, mainly along the west side through Friday.  During the night and morning hours, winds will be mainly in the 5 to 10 MPH range and mainly  out of the northwest.  Winds Saturday and Sunday will generally range in the 5 to 12 MPH range out of the northwest.

Rain: Expect dry conditions for at least the next seven to ten days.
