June 29, 2020
Summary: It is quite a refreshing morning out there as all ag locations from Madera southward through Kern County are reporting readings in the low to mid 50s as of 6:00am. Anytime you have highs in the 80s, which we’ll enjoy this afternoon, consider it a very temporary summer reprieve. The freezing level has dropped from 17,400 feet Saturday to 12,500 feet this morning. all this is due to a rather robust low pressure system which is now centered over southern Idaho.
A strong on shore flow continues today so gusty northwesterly winds can be expected, especially along the west side where local gusts to near 30 MPH are possible. Forecast models indicate the low will slowly migrate into Montana and weaken, eventually forming a broad area of weak low pressure over the Pacific Northwest eastward into the Rockies. There will be occasional minor impulses moving through this trough and into northern California from time to time through Thursday.
Temperatures will begin to warm Tuesday but for now no triple digits are expected. However, models are now showing the development of upper level high pressure over Texas which will retrograde back over the Four Corners region over the weekend. This pattern typically sets up the monsoon season in the Desert Southwest. Occasionally during the summer months, the high will move out far enough to the west for monsoonal moisture to move over California. However, I don’t see this happening any time soon as that trough over the Pacific Northwest will maintain a southwesterly flow, keeping monsoonal moisture well south and east of our region.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies and mild today. Mostly clear with a warming trend Tuesday through Wednesday. Mostly clear Wednesday night through Monday.

Two Week Outlook: July 6 through July 13: This model is indicating a fairly typical summer pattern with high pressure dominating over the eastern Pacific, extending over California into the Desert Southwest. Temperatures will be marginally above average with typical dry conditions continuing.
July: This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks. The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil. Average precipitation for the month is .01.
July, August, September: This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret. July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics. This out look appears fairly typical. Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.
Winds Discussion: Winds will be out of the northwest today at 10 to 20 MPH at times. Local gusts to 30 MPH are possible, mainly in western Fresno and Kern Counties and much of Kings County. Winds later this evening will decrease and range from 5 t0 10 MPH in the early morning hours. For Tuesday through Thursday, afternoon and evening winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH. Winds during the night and morning hours will be generally less than 7 MPH with possible periods of near calm conditions.
Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
