Forecast

July 15, 2020

Summary:  A weak upper low off the southern California coast is maintaining a deep marine layer.  The latest sounding at Monterey indicates the marine layer’s depth is 2,700 feet.  Winds at the Delta have gusted as high as 37 MPH during the early morning hours.  The high temperature at Los Banos yesterday was only 87 degrees, due to modified marine air pouring through Pacheco Pass.  This same low may add enough lift to the atmosphere to trigger isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada this afternoon and again Thursday afternoon.  Triple digits will again be a way of life beginning Thursday as the pool of marine air mixes out and upper level high pressure currently over Texas begins to shift westward again over the Desert Southwest and eventually California.  One element of the weather I keep a close eye on this time of year is the monsoon.  Some models point to a southerly flow developing this weekend, possibly moving enough moisture into central California for a chance of thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada during the afternoons and evenings and periods of mid and high level clouds over the valley floor.  This is not a complete given yet, but it is that time of year.  Expect hot weather to last through at least the middle of next week as persistent upper level high pressure covers the Desert Southwest and California, clamping down on the marine layer.

Forecast:  clear skies through Saturday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Saturday night through Wednesday and hot.

Two Week Outlook:  July 21 through July 27:  This model shows a trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest while upper level high pressure remains over the Desert Southwest.  This pattern allows marginally above average temperatures for mid July with typical dry conditions continuing.

July:  This model indicates warmer than average temperatures over the next four weeks.  The usual dry pattern will prevail in the San Joaquin Valley with the chance of precipitation on any given day being almost nil.  Average precipitation for the month is .01.

July, August, September:  This time of year, the 90 day out look is no secret.  July and August will be hot and dry while September has a minor risk of precipitation, mainly from the tropics.  This out look appears fairly typical.  Marginally above average temperatures are expected with near average precipitation, which is a meaningless projection.

Winds Discussion: Winds during the afternoon and evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH with locally stronger gusts through Saturday.  winds during the night and morning hours will be variable to 7 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion: Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.
