At the upper levels of the atmosphere, high pressure continues to build in from the west. At the surface, pressures are virtually flat. At last report, San Francisco and Las Vegas were reporting an altimeter reading of 29.88. the marine layer is also fairly stable with a depth of about 1,200 feet at Monterey.
As the high continues to build, temperatures will rise to early summer type values with widespread mid to upper 90s through Friday. It’s possible isolated locations could push the century mark Wednesday and Thursday.
On Saturday, a weak trough of low pressure will drop southward from the Pacific Northwest then into northern California. This feature may form almost a closed low circulation as it moves southeastward into southern California Sunday and into western Arizona Monday. This will trigger a deepening marine layer over the weekend. That, coupled with cooler air aloft, will lower temperatures to more seasonal levels into early next week. This system may have enough lift for scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday afternoons over the high Sierra.
A new ridge of high pressure will build in from the west by late Monday. However, models continue to indicate a stronger trough will move into the western US from the 19th through the 22nd for a more substantial cooling trend.
Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Friday. Mostly clear Friday night through Tuesday with the possibility of partly cloudy skies Sunday.
