The center of upper level high pressure this morning remains over the Four Corners region with California flanked along the western rim of the high. The main heat belt is still over southern California and the Desert Southwest. There is a 4.6 millibar difference in pressure between Salinas and Fresno. The marine layer is 2,500 thick and is moving through the Delta and Pacheco Pass. Winds are sustained out of the southwest at 20 MPH and out of the west at 13 through Pacheco Pass. These winds will increase later today when the daytime heating effect begins. This should be enough to keep temperatures in the mid to upper 90s from Madera County north and near the century mark elsewhere.
The fourth major heatwave of the summer will begin Thursday as the Four Corners high shifts slowly to the west. By Friday afternoon, the high will be centered over Nevada and will remain there through Monday. This high will be unusually strong with temperatures eclipsing the 110 degree mark Saturday through Tuesday. There is the possibility of in and out cloud cover from the monsoon. Temperatures may remain in the low to mid 80s for overnight lows in Fresno and Bakersfield and locally elsewhere. For now, we’ll keep thunderstorms out of the forecast over the Sierra Nevada due to the strong downward motion of the atmosphere.
The next hope of a cooling trend will begin around Wednesday or Thursday of next week when most models show the high moving a bit towards the southeast, allowing the very weak trough of low pressure to move into the Pacific Northwest and northern California. This will push modified marine air into the valley.
Forecast: Mostly clear and hot through Thursday. Mostly clear and extremely hot Friday through Tuesday with occasional high clouds.

Two Week Outlook: July 12 through July 18: This model shows an active monsoon into the Desert Southwest and, to a lesser extent, southern California and the Sierra Nevada. This pattern always offers a small chance of some rain with above average temperatures continuing.
July: The 30 day outlook for July follows the trend set in June with above average temperatures and upper level high pressure that’s stronger than usual. The typical dry conditions will continue.
July, August, September: Above average temperatures can be expected for the next three months. This model is given equal chance of rain for not only California but also the parched desert southwest.
Winds Discussion: During the afternoon and evening, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 5 to 12 MPH. During the night and morning hours, winds will be generally at or less than 10 MPH with periods of near calm conditions.
