Forecast

January 10, 2022/afternoon report

January 10, 2022

As of 1:00pm, the fog and low clouds had cleared from most of the  valley. However, there was still one large patch covering eastern Kings and western Tulare Counties. Most locations, though, are reporting temperatures in the low to mid 50s with dew points in the mid to upper 40s.   a warm bubble of subsiding air is above the valley floor. The balloon sounding this morning over Vandenberg indicated the freezing level was 16,000 feet, which could easily be a summertime reading. This time of year, however, it just creates a warm air  inversion which is ripe for fog and low clouds, mainly during the night and morning hours.

Outside of occasional periods of high clouds from ripples of upper level low pressure, skies will be generally clear with hazy afternoon sunshine. Afternoon highs in areas that enjoy some afternoon sun will rise into the low to mid 60s.

A cut off low is developing well southwest of San Diego which will be too far off shore to impact the valley’s weather, although some models indicate this feature will eventually move northeast into southern California in about a week or so. Even so, this feature is largely dry.

I keep looking for fundamental changes on longer range models but for now, there is none. So expect more of the same for the next week to possibly ten days.

Forecast: Areas of fog and/or low clouds with hazy afternoon sunshine in most areas during the afternoons with occasional periods of high clouds above the fog through Monday of next week.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be generally at or less than 6 MPH with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday..

Rain: No rain is expected for at least the next seven to 10 days

Frost: All locations will be above 32 degrees tonight and each night this week. Low lying river bottom, where skies remain clear during the overnight hours, will near the 32 degree mark. For now, there’s nothing on models suggesting a particularly cold pattern on the horizon.
