July 11, 2022

The same strong upper high which in some cases has resulted in record high temperatures over the Midwest has retrograded westward and now covers real estate from California to Arkansas and Missouri. Temperatures which yesterday were right around the century mark at most locations will be pushed into the 102 to 107 degree range each day for the remainder of the week. the warm subsiding air associated with the high has the marine layer down to 1,300 feet with only light winds in the Delta, assuring marine air will not be a factor this week. winds aloft have become southeasterly. This will begin to rotate in a minor amount of monsoon moisture up the Sierra Nevada. Currently, the temperature at Sandberg at an elevation of 4,100 feet is 69 degrees, 5 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. At Blue Canyon at 5,600 feet the reading was 73 degrees, 12 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. All of the medium range models show high pressure over the west and southwest with summer continuing not only for this week, but for next week as well.

Two Week Outlook:  July 18 through July 24  This model continues to indicate upper level high pressure will be over much of the western states with an active monsoon in the Desert Southwest. It’s possible some of this moisture may leak into southern and central California for a chance of isolated thunderstorms over the high Sierra and occasional cloud cover over the valley floor. Temperatures will remain somewhat above average with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June:  This model shows a high center over New Mexico and Texas extending into California for marginally above average temperatures for the month with the usual dry conditions prevailing.

June, July, August: This model is hinting at a possible active monsoon season this year once we get into July and August. It’s possible we could see more than the usual amount of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada but the valley will be typically dry with above average temperatures.

Wind Discussion: During the afternoon and evening hours, winds will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with locally stronger gusts. During the late evening through the morning hours, winds will be variable to 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Thursday.

Rain:  Expect dry conditions for the next 7 to 10 days.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
