Forecast

August 27, 2022/report

August 27, 2022

The latest sounding at Monterey indicated the depth of the marine layer is 1,800 feet. Winds in the Delta are sustained at 19mph. Yesterday, Merced had a high of 99 and Los Banos 97 with readings in the lower 100s  in the remainder of the central and south valley. There’s’ just not enough difference in surface pressure to tug that modified sea breeze southward. That will change over the next 24 hours however as a weak trough of low pressure traverses the Pacific Northwest, strengthening the onshore flow enough to allow the modified sea breeze to cool the entire valley. Temperatures will finally drop into double digits. Yesterday was the sixteenth day in a row that Fresno was at or above the century mark, so it will be nice to have a brief respite. However, the next round of triple digits is already on the horizon, beginning the middle of next week when a large high in the upper atmosphere blankets the western states. Its center will be over Utah. Readings by Wednesday will again be in the lower 100s and will stay in the 101 to 106 degree range for several days thereafter. The high will position itself in such a way as to suppress the monsoon too far to the south to affect us. This weather note: It’s been a very quiet hurricane season so far in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, and it appears this trend will continue even though we are approaching the traditional peak of the hurricane season.

Forecast: Mostly clear through Wednesday. Mostly clear Wednesday night through Saturday.

Two Week Outlook:  September 3 through September 9:  This model shows the monsoon moving slightly to our east, reducing the chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada. The trend of above average temperatures this August will continue.

August:  This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.

August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.

Wind Discussion:  Winds will be mainly out of the northwest afternoons and evenings at 5 to 12 mph through Tuesday. Winds during the night and morning hours will be light to near calm.

Rain: Expect dry weather indefinitely.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
