There are still some scrappy mid level clouds over portions of the valley, mostly based between 10,000 and 15,000 feet. Even so, they’re on their way out as a dry westerly wind flow begins in the upper atmosphere, so pushing the remains of Kay into the Great Basin. A trough of low pressure is now settling in along the west coast. Synoptic cooling will begin today as temperatures drop a good 7 to 10 degrees with further cooling Wednesday through Friday when we’ll end up in the low to mid 80s. weak impulses will be moving through this trough from time to time which will deepen the marine layer, adding to the cooling effect. Over the weekend, the trough will deepen as a Pacific storm develops off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. This system will drop a trough into northern California Saturday and Sunday. Showers will spread over northern California. There’s even a chance of light showers as far south as Merced County, but the remainder of the valley will remain dry with temperatures dropping into the upper 70s Sunday and Monday. readings will remain below average next week, as well. The two week model, however, brings temperatures above average once again.
Forecast: Partly cloudy this morning. Becoming mostly clear this afternoon through Friday. Partly cloudy Saturday through Monday. mostly clear Monday night and Tuesday.

Two Week Outlook: September 19 through September 26: This model shows temperatures warming to marginally above average during the period. Moisture will continue to move into Arizona from time to time, but for now it appears it will not affect central California.
August: This model is quite generic, indicating the same trend of high pressure resulting in generally above average temperatures for the month of August. Precipitation will be near average, which means very little to none. This model continues to show an active monsoon over the west which may visit California from time to time.
August, September, October: Upper level high pressure will be more dominant over the next few months, resulting in somewhat above average temperatures. This year’s monsoon, which has been an active one so far, will result in a continuation of above average precipitation over the Desert Southwest and possibly the Sierra Nevada.
Wind Discussion: During the afternoons and evenings through Friday, winds will be out of the northwest at 5 to 15 mph. Local gusts to 20 mph are possible, especially along the interstate 5 corridor.
Rain: I expect dry weather through Friday and possibly beyond. I’m a little hesitant as a couple of models bring the rain line down to almost Fresno over the weekend. There will be a slight chance of showers as far south as Merced Saturday and Sunday with a slight chance of sprinkles elsewhere. Currently, that chance is no more than 10% to 20%
Frost: All locations will be above freezing tonight and each night for the foreseeable future.
