February 8, 2023 afternoon report

February 8, 2023

Upper level high pressure continues to build northward along the west coast. Most locations on the valley floor are running in the mid to upper 50s at midday and will warm into the lower 60s by the time this day goes into the history books. As the high continues to build, temperatures will respond accordingly Thursday and Friday. In fact, readings at the warmest locations will be near the 70 degree mark Friday afternoon. The high will give way Friday night and Saturday to a moisture starved low pressure system digging southward from western Canada. By Saturday morning, the low center is projected to be over north central California. The Sierra Nevada should provide enough lift for some light snow showers over the higher elevations with a sight chance of sprinkle over the valley floor. the low will track southward to a position near Sonora, Mexico by Monday morning. By the middle of next week, a new low will drop into the interior west with California being on its far western flank by Wednesday morning. Like its predecessor, it won’t carry much moisture, but will result in a greater possibility of showers over the mountains and a small risk of sprinkles over the valley floor Wednesday.

Forecast: other than pockets of night and morning fog and low clouds, mainly up the center of the valley from Delano north, it will be mostly clear through Friday. Variable cloudiness Friday night through Saturday night with a slight chance of sprinkles Saturday and Saturday night. Mostly clear Sunday through Monday night. Variable cloudiness Tuesday and Wednesday with a slight chance of showers Tuesday and Tuesday night.

Wind Discussion: Winds will be generally at or less than 6 mph with periods of near calm conditions through Saturday.

Rain: There are two minor chances for slight amounts of precip over the next week. the first will be mainly over the Sierra Nevada as a closed low circulation overhead Saturday. Sprinkles will be possible, however measurable rain at any location is unlikely. The second event will be next Tuesday and Wednesday as a moisture starved inside slider moves into the interior west with California flanked on the far western side. Again, what little precipitation falls will be mainly over the Sierra Nevada with a minimal chance of no more than a few hundredths over the valley floor. dry weather will return thereafter, lasting for several days.

Frost:  Only the coldest low lying frost pockets will dip into the low 30s tonight. Most locations will range between 33 and 36 degrees. On Friday morning, all locations will be above 32 degrees. A pool of colder air will arrive in the form of a cold low from western Canada Saturday. By the time we get into Sunday through Wednesday, lows will again be in the low to mid 30s with even a chance of those coldest locations dipping into the upper 20s. At any rate, there continues to be no pattern that would result in anything dangerous.
