November 3, 2023 report

November 3, 2023

Summary  The higher level clouds above the valley this morning are from a weather system that moved through the Pacific Northwest yesterday and has moved rapidly eastward into the northern Rockies. In the meantime, a zone of upper level high pressure stretches from off the southern California coast to well out over the Pacific Ocean. The storm track continues to run from west to east into the Pacific Northwest. The next storm will move into Washington and Oregon over the weekend with a trough hanging southward into the northern half of California Monday. this will result in another slight chance of showers or sprinkles down to Merced County Monday. the remainder of the growing area will continue to be dry. The Pacific Northwest will continue to tally up generous rainfall amounts through Friday of next week. temperatures will begin to lower somewhat next week but will still be seasonal. The forecast is a bit complex Friday through Saturday of next week. as a trough of low pressure moves inland, some models are indicating a second low pressure system may form over central California, in which case we would have a chance of showers. Most models show a ridge of high pressure building inland during the second half of next weekend for the return of a dry weather pattern.

Forecast  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy through Sunday night. Variable cloudiness Monday through Tuesday with a slight chance of sprinkles or showers as far south as Merced County Monday through Tuesday. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Tuesday night through Thursday night. Mostly cloudy Friday with a slight chance of showers.

Two Week Outlook:  November 8 through November 13     The storm track will remain active through the Pacific Northwest and northern California during this period,, meaning measurable rain will be possible, especially over the northern portion of the growing area. Temperatures will remain above average.

October:  This model indicates that October will be marginally warmer than average. It also points to above average precipitation from Texas t o southern California. Central California will have a better than even chance of above average precipitation.

October, November, December  This model shows a marginal chance of above average temperatures over the next 90 days. There is no indication of above or below average precipitation through December. We will be dealing with a strong El Nino this winter. Whether or not that translates into abundant rainfall for central California remains to be seen.

Wind Discussion  Winds through this evening will be mainly out of the northwest at 8 to 15 mph with stronger gusts along the west side. Winds later tonight through Monday will be mainly at or less than 10 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain Discussion.  There’s a slight chance of sprinkles or showers down to Merced County Monday through Tuesday. The rest of the valley will remain dry. Dry weather will continue through at least Thursday night. Models are showing at least a slight chance of showers over the entire valley Friday and Friday night as a low center moves through. Expect dry weather Friday and beyond.
