November 20, 2023 afternoon report

November 20, 2023

Summary:  A ridge of upper level high pressure now covers the eastern Pacific and encompasses the western ¼ of the US with a ridge extending northward into British Colombia. The ridge will begin to give way to a weak trough of low pressure Wednesday night and Thursday. This will quickly be followed by a low dropping southward from western Canada and into the interior west Friday and Saturday. By Saturday morning, the low will extend from Wyoming and Colorado westward into California. This, in turn, creates a northeast flow. The air mass, especially with this feature is not that cold, however it should lower dew points enough for areas of frost to develop Sunday through Tuesday of next week. this is by no means a freeze event but rather one where low to mid 30s will be common with coldest locations down to 29 or so. Medium range models still show dry conditions for much of California for the next 7 to possibly 10 days.

Forecast: Mostly clear tonight. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Tuesday with patchy night and morning fog.  Variable cloudiness at times Wednesday and Wednesday night. mostly clear skies Thanksgiving Day through Monday.

Winds:  Winds through Thursday will be generally at or less than 7 mph with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain: No rain is likely for the next week to possibly 10 days.   the following week. longer range models depict below average precipitation through the end of the month.

Frost:  All locations will be above freezing tonight but just at or slightly above in the coldest low lying locations. Cloud cover will keep temperatuures above freezing Wednesday morning. mid 30s to lower 40s will be common Thanksgiving through Saturday. A broad area of low pressure will developing over the Great Basin and Rocky Mountain region Friday night through Saturday. California will be on the far western edge. No active weather will accompany this system, however it will develop a surface off shore flow and a northeast flow aloft. The air mass is seasonally cold. The only question is determining dew points as somewhat drier air mixes down to the valley floor. for Sunday through Tuesday, low to mid 30s will be more common with a chance of upper 20s in the coldest low lying frost pockets.  Longer range models through the end of the month are still indicating generally average temperatures with little chance sub freezing temperatures.
