December 10, 2023 afternoon report

December 9, 2023

Summary:   Variable amounts of high thin clouds can be expected through Monday morning, otherwise mostly clear. Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Monday night through Sunday with patches of night and morning fog and low clouds.

Frost:  Variable amounts of high, thin clouds are moving west to east across central California this afternoon. These cloud aren’t really dense enough to have a true impact on overnight temperatures even though daytime highs have moved into the mid to upper 50s. high resolution short range forecasts are indicating we’ll have sky cover tonight, as much as 60% at times. The main question is whether these cloud will be dense enough to interfere with the radiational cooling process. If the clouds slow the cooling process, lows will only be in the 30s tonight with the very coldest locations coming in at 28 to 29. There will be less cloud cover Tuesday morning with lows dropping into the upper 20s to the lower 30s. a sharp ridge of pressure is projected to build aloft Wednesday. This system will eventually form a  cut off low over Arizona while the high continues to build into California. This will allow a warming trend to develop with mid to upper 60s by Wednesday. This will eventually begin to moderate low temperatures as well with readings mostly in the 30s on Thursday and into the weekend. Longer range models still show the ridge of high pressure beginning to break down around the 20th, possibly allowing a wet weather pattern to begin.

Lows tonight will chill tonight into the low to mid 30s. Highs Monday will warm into the upper 50s to the low to mid 60s. Lows Tuesday morning will be in the upper 20s to the lower 30s.
