March 3, 2024 report

March 3, 2024

Summary The following are rainfall totals for the entire storm as of 4:00am: Bakersfield .14, Shafter .15, Porterville .53, Delano .32, Exeter 1.10, Tulare .54, Visalia .48, Hanford .38, Lemoore .31, Dinuba .59, Reedley .95, Fresno .85, Madera .43, Merced .21. In the mountains, here are some of the heavier rainfall totals: Chilkoot Meadow 7.48, Nature Point (near Bass Lake) 7.08, Bear Trap Meadow in Tulare County 5.15, 5.30 at Giant Forest.  One can only imagine the amount of snow on the ground. The center of circulation of the cold upper low is now moving into the Pacific Northwest. Showers will begin to taper off this morning with dry weather finally returning this afternoon and continuing through at least Monday night and possibly Tuesday. The next weather system will be off the northern California coast Tuesday night. it will slide southward parallel to the coast, eventually moving in through northern Baja by Thursday. This is not an impressive looking system, but still deserves to have a chance of light showers in the forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday. Upper level high pressure will follow, governing our weather from Tuesday through at least Saturday for a period of dry weather through next weekend.

Forecast: A chance of showers today, mainly this morning. partly to mostly cloudy tonight and Monday morning. becoming mostly clear Monday afternoon through Monday night. increasing cloudiness Tuesday leading to a chance of light showers Tuesday night and  Wednesday. A slight chance of showers Wednesday evening, otherwise it will be partly cloudy. Mostly clear Thursday through Saturday night. partly cloudy Sunday.

Two Week Forecast:  March 9 through March 15: This model still indicates a pretty good signature for above average precipitation during this period. We will generally be below average in temperatures with at least about a 30% chance of precipitation.

Thirty Day Report: If this model has much credence, rainfall will remain above average, especially in northern and central California, stretching into the interior west. Temperatures however, look to be marginally below average.

Ninety Day Report: This model indicates near to marginally above average rainfall over the next three months. Equal chances are given for temperatures being above or below average.

Winds:  Winds will be variable to no more than eight miles per hour through Wednesday with periods of near calm conditions, especially during the night and morning hours.

Rain: The best chance of showers today will be during the morning hours. Even if showers occur, amounts will be light. Expect dry weather this afternoon through Tuesday. A weak weather system will brush the central coast Tuesday night and Wednesday for a chance of light showers. This appears to be the only real chance of precipitation after today as dry weather will begin Wednesday night and last through the weekend. For now, there’s no great signature for rain for the following week.

Frost: Temperatures in the colder locations where skies clear will dip into the mid to upper 30s tonight and again Monday night. it’s possible isolated river bottom type locations may dip into the lower 30s, but if this occurs, durations will be short. Expect above freezing temperatures for the remainder of the week. medium range models show no chance of frost through the weekend and well into next week.

Mid afternoon dew points: Mid 40s to the lower 50s. Kern: Mid to upper 40s.
