April 25, 2018/report

April 25, 2018

Summary: Temperatures again this afternoon will eclipse the 90 degree mark.  There are inklings of change out there, however, as the marine layer has deepened to 2,200 feet and some of that sea breeze is beginning to move through the Delta.  Winds at Traverse Air Force Base, at last report, were gusting to 25 MPH.  Down the road at Pacheco Pass, winds were still fairly light, indicating the sea breeze is not as of yet moving through the coastal gaps and passes.

The high will begin to shift eastward today in response to a large but moisture starved low pressure system off the northern California coast.  The low will begin to slowly move towards northern California on Thursday, deepening the marine layer enough to allow that modified sea breeze to begin to move all the way down the valley.  Locally gusty winds will begin along the west side on Thursday then will fan out throughout the valley later Thursday night and Friday.

Most models this morning are indicating the low will slowly track through northern California Saturday through Sunday.  None suggests precipitation for the valley floor.  Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible along the Sierra Nevada.  The main impacts of all this will be periods of breezy weather and much cooler temperatures.

Another trough of low pressure will move through around Monday night or Tuesday.  This appears to be a dry event, as well, but it will keep temperatures near to possibly marginally below average through Tuesday.  After Tuesday, upper level high pressure will begin to build along the west coast for dry weather with temperatures eventually warming to above average values.

Forecast: Mostly clear skies through Thursday night.  Partly cloudy Friday through Sunday.  Mostly clear to occasionally partly cloudy Sunday night and Monday.  Partly cloudy Tuesday.  Becoming mostly clear Tuesday night and Wednesday.
