Forecast

November 29, 2017/pm report

November 29, 2017

Summary: The high clouds that were over the south valley this morning have moved into southern California, revealing mostly clear skies over the entire valley this afternoon.  Temperatures are again warming into the lower 60s with dew points in the low to mid 40s.  So, very little has changed over the past 24 hours.  The only difference between tonight and last night is the veil of high clouds will not be present.

Upper level high pressure extends from the eastern Pacific Ocean and ridges over California into the Great Basin.  This high will govern the pattern through Friday night and the main challenge will continue to be areas of night and morning fog, mainly north of Kern County and up the center of the valley.  Where the fog does not occur, hazy conditions will prevail.

A weather system will approach the coast of the Pacific Northwest and northwest California Saturday.  Models continue to suggest a split pattern with most of the energy moving inland well to our north and just some cloud cover for central California.  A minor cooling trend can be expected Sunday and Monday, lowering daytime highs back to seasonal values.

The medium range outlook encompassing the latter half of next week and beyond shows a massive upper high developing over the western United States, ridging northward into western Canada with a deep arctic trough digging into the Midwest and extending far to the south.  This amplified pattern will result in above to well above average temperatures for central California with potentially bitterly cold temperatures east of the Rockies.  If this model were to occur today, Florida’s citrus would potentially be at risk, so I’m sure the boys back in the southeast are watching this carefully.

Forecast:  Areas of night and morning fog and low clouds.  Otherwise it will be mostly clear and hazy through Friday night.  partly cloudy Saturday through Monday with patchy night and morning fog.  Mostly clear Monday night through Wednesday with areas of night and morning fog.

Winds: Winds will be generally less than 10 MPH through Saturday with periods of near calm conditions.

Rain:  Expect dry weather for at least the next seven to ten days.

Frost Information:  The character of the air mass trapped on the valley floor is little changed this afternoon as compared to 24 hours ago.  Temperatures at most locations are rising into the lower 60s and dew points remain in the low to mid 40s.  the only difference between tonight and last night is that the high clouds that were present last night have moved on, so skies will be generally clear.  This will allow good radiational cooling once again with most locations chilling into the 30s and coldest locations dipping into the lower 30s.  I would anticipate similar conditions Friday morning as well as Saturday morning.  Some cloud cover will increase over the weekend so I do look for above freezing conditions Sunday and Monday mornings.  A marginally cooler air mass will spread over central California Monday and Tuesday, dropping temperatures back into the 30s again with coldest locations potentially in the lower 30s.

From roughly Thursday of next week on, models continue to trend towards a massive high building over the western states with a big ridge extending almost into the Yukon Territory of Canada.  In the meantime, an arctic trough of low pressure is projected to dig farther south into the Midwest and possibly into the deep south.  In fact, if medium range models were today’s models, our counterparts in Florida would be biting their nails over a potential freeze.  Fortunately for them, for now this is a medium range outlook so we’ll  just have to wait and see if this trend continues.
